No more motorcycles at Pikes Peak

Since 1916, motorcycles have been a recurring part of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, one of the most famous hill climbs held annually in Colorado, USA. Now it has been decided that motorcycles will no longer compete in the event.

Race to the Clouds without motorcycles

The cult race on the almost 20 km long course with 156 curves and a difference in altitude of 1,439 m will therefore no longer be held for motorcycles in the future. Already a few years ago the participation of supersport bikes had been forbidden, because one wanted to prevent a dangerous performance competition on the mountain. In the meantime, however, naked bikes have also reached the performance of supersport bikes and at the last motorcycle time race (the participants start individually, only the times are compared) on Pikes Peak there was unfortunately also a fatal accident.

In 2019, Carlin Dunne crashed his Ducati Streetfighter V4, which was brand new then and not even available at that time. On a record time course, he lost control of the Streetfighter in the last corner before the finish and crashed. The reason is said to have been bumps in the track. Shortly afterwards he succumbed to his injuries. After that, the participation of motorcycles was suspended for the time being. Now it was decided that motorcycles would be excluded from the competition in the future as well.
