The current status: Testastretta twin still in use
The previous DesertX, which has been available since 2022, uses the familiar 932 cm³ Testastretta 11° inline twin cylinder engine, which is also used in the Monster model. This engine delivers around 110 hp (81 kW) at 9,250 rpm and offers a maximum torque of around 92 Nm. The motorcycle is considered an insider tip among connoisseurs in the adventure sector, but has so far received little attention in the broader market.
Advantages of an engine change
Switching to the 890 cm³ V2 engine could offer Ducati several advantages. Standardizing the drive platforms reduces production costs and facilitates maintenance. Compared to the previous engine, the V2 is considered lighter and slightly more powerful. In addition, the V2 engine does away with the often-criticized desmodromic valve control, which should simplify maintenance for hobby mechanics. The maintenance intervals are also longer for the V2, which reduces operating costs.
Market launch and price: differing estimates
It is currently unclear whether the new DesertX V2 will actually be unveiled at EICMA this year. While some European trade media expect an unveiling at the show, other sources suggest that Ducati will present the model later. The development status of the prototype that has appeared does not yet appear to be close to series production. According to Spanish media reports, the new model will be priced at around €16,490 (approx. $17,400).
Appearance and character to remain unchanged
The DesertX is known for its unique design and stands out from other adventure bikes with its distinctive look. Even with a new V2 engine, the characteristic appearance is expected to remain unchanged according to current estimates. It remains to be seen whether the new powertrain will retain the balanced handling that riders appreciate.
