The CB1300 Super Four is one of the motorcycles that has had a loyal fan base for decades. With its classic naked bike design and powerful in-line four-cylinder engine, it has established itself as a popular model, particularly in Japan and other markets. But now its history is coming to an end: Honda has announced a “Final Edition”, which will mark the last chapter of this model series.
The roots of the CB1300 Super Four go back over 30 years. In 1992, Honda presented the “Project Big 1”, a series that was based on classic, high-capacity naked bikes. Over the years, the basic concept of the CB1300 has remained largely unchanged: a powerful engine, a classic tubular steel frame and a tidy cockpit with analog round instruments. It was precisely this mixture of retro design and modern technology that made the machine popular with many riders.
Particularly in Japan and some other markets, the CB1300 Super Four was an integral part of Honda’s model range over the years. In the USA, however, it was never officially offered, apart from a few gray imports, and it has not been available in Germany for a few years now. Now the final end is imminent, as Honda has published an official teaser website for the final edition of the CB1300 Super Four.
Retro design with modern details
The current version of the CB1300 also remains true to the classic style. The cockpit continues to rely on two analog round instruments for revs and speed, only supplemented in the middle by a small LCD display for further information. The lighting, on the other hand, meets today’s standards: LED headlights ensure better visibility.
Despite its traditional character, the CB1300 offers some modern conveniences. These include heated grips, a USB charging socket and practical, angled valves for easier air pressure checks. These details make the motorcycle more suitable for everyday use without losing its nostalgic charm.
Technical data of the current CB1300
The CB1300 Super Four is powered by a liquid-cooled 1,284 cc DOHC in-line four-cylinder engine. Honda gives the power output as 111 hp (82 kW) at 7,750 rpm. The maximum torque is 112 Nm at 6,250 rpm. Power is transmitted via a six-speed gearbox.
For the chassis, Honda relies on a double tubular steel frame in combination with a conventional telescopic fork at the front and two spring struts at the rear. The braking system consists of disc brakes at the front and rear, supported by modern ABS technology.
The weight of the CB1300 Super Four is 266 kg (586.4 lbs), while the Super Bol d’Or with its small front fairing is somewhat heavier at 272 kg (599.6 lbs). This makes it not exactly one of the lightest machines, but it fits in well with the character of this large-volume naked bike.
The end of an era
The announcement of the “Final Edition” marks the end of a series steeped in tradition. Honda has not yet released full details of the last version of the CB1300, but it can be assumed that it will be based on the previous model range in terms of appearance and technology.
It remains to be seen whether this machine will eventually be traded as a collector’s item. What is certain, however, is that the CB1300 was a constant in the classic naked bike segment for over three decades. With its withdrawal, the market is losing one of the last large-volume models of this type.
