BMW is launching two exciting new editions in the Hyper Naked Bike series for the 2025 model year: the BMW S 1000 R and the BMW M 1000 R.  Both models are based on the familiar in-line four-cylinder technology, but come with different equipment features and performance data to meet different demands for sporty naked bike riding.  A detailed look at the new features and differences shows what the two models offer in detail.

Engine and performance – differences between the S 1000 R and M 1000 R

Both machines rely on the proven 999 cc in-line four-cylinder engine.  However, there are significant differences in terms of performance: the S 1000 R now offers 125 kW (170 hp) at 11,000 rpm and therefore 5 hp more than its predecessor model.  This increase in power was achieved by adapting the intake ducts and a newly tuned mapping.  The maximum torque of 114 Nm remains unchanged and is available at 9,250 rpm.

The M 1000 R, designed as a performance version, adds another 40 hp and achieves an impressive 154 kW (210 hp) at 13,750 rpm.  Its maximum torque is 113 Nm at 11,000 rpm.  This increased power should benefit the M 1000 R particularly on the racetrack, where a rapid build-up of revs and high top speeds are required.

New design and optimized aerodynamics

Visually, both models are similar, but the M 1000 R stands out with a number of aerodynamic and design details.  Both bikes feature the new LED twin headlight unit, which is also familiar in a similar form from the supersport models in the RR series.  It ensures even illumination of the road and enhances the aggressive look of both models.

Additional carbon winglets are used on the M 1000 R, which have been specially developed for better aerodynamics at high speeds.  They are designed to increase the contact pressure on the road and thus create more stability in dynamic riding situations.  The S 1000 R has these winglets as an optional accessory, while they are fitted as standard on the M 1000 R.  Both models are available in several attractive color variants, including the iconic Blackstorm Metallic and the sporty Lightwhite uni/M Motorsport for the M version.

M short-stroke throttle grip and optimized control

Both models are equipped with the new M short-stroke throttle grip, which reduces the turning angle from the previous 72 degrees to 58 degrees.  This enables faster and more relaxed throttle control without much wrist movement.  This short-stroke throttle grip is particularly advantageous on the racetrack, as it can be controlled more precisely and with less effort.  While this throttle grip on the S 1000 R is designed for the road, its effect on the M 1000 R is particularly evident in sporty racing, where fast reactions are required.

Rider assistance systems and traction control

Both bikes are equipped with modern rider assistance systems.  The new traction control DTC (Dynamic Traction Control), which has been further developed in the M 1000 R, is included in both models.  Improved control of the throttle valves ensures increased control in various riding situations.

Another new feature on both bikes is the engine drag torque control (MSR).  This system detects a potential risk of the rear wheel slipping at an early stage in the event of sudden throttle opening or rapid gear changes and adjusts the throttle valve position in milliseconds to reduce the drag torque.  This function is intended to offer greater safety, particularly in slippery road conditions or in sporty use.

Shift assistant and specific racing features of the M 1000 R

Both models are equipped with a standard gearshift assistant, which enables fast gearshifts without clutch actuation.  It has been particularly optimized for the M 1000 R, where smooth shifting is guaranteed even at high engine speeds and with the throttle open.  This reduces interruptions in tractive force and ensures smooth gear changes on the racetrack.

The M 1000 R also offers a shorter secondary gear ratio with a 17-to-46-tooth sprocket ratio, which is specially designed for increased sprint performance.  The S 1000 R, on the other hand, is designed for balanced acceleration and road capability and relies on the standard gear ratio.

Safety and comfort features for everyday use

Both models have extensive standard equipment designed to increase both safety and comfort.  For example, the intelligent E-CALL emergency call system and a USB-C charging socket under the seat are standard on both models.  In emergency situations, E-CALL can automatically establish contact with a call center and activate the rescue chain.  It can also be triggered manually.

The license plate holder has been shortened on both bikes and contributes to a sportier rear design, particularly in the style of the M 1000 R.  These details contribute to a more compact look and enhance the sporty appearance of both models.

Accessories and customization options

BMW offers a wide range of accessories for both models to customize the naked bike according to your own preferences.  Optional carbon winglets and a tinted windshield are available for the S 1000 R, which are intended to make the design sportier and more aerodynamic.  Handlebar end mirrors, a luggage plate for the pillion seat and a navigation bracket are also available.

The M 1000 R is already equipped with M carbon wheels and M-specific lightweight components as standard.  The M Competition version is available for riders who want maximum weight reduction and performance.  This includes additional carbon components and further contributes to weight optimization.

In summary, BMW is presenting two clear options for different requirements with the S 1000 R and M 1000 R models.  While the S 1000 R offers well-tuned performance and features suitable for everyday use, the M 1000 R with maximum performance and numerous racetrack features is aimed at ambitious riders who also want to push the hyper naked bike to the limit in sporty use.
