Montana introduces Lane Filtering

driving ban 3806936

On March 03, 2021, the US state of Montana officially recognized lane filtering. This makes it the third US state to introduce lane filtering in traffic jams for motorcyclists. As of Oct. 1, 2021, the change will go into effect.

Certain circumstances must be met

Lane filtering is subject to certain conditions, however. The lane must be wide enough for the motorcyclist to pass other vehicles in a safe manner. When overtaking stationary or slow-moving vehicles, a speed of 20 mph must not be exceeded.

Lane filtering was also described in the law, of course. It is overtaking and passing another vehicle that has stopped, or is traveling at a speed not exceeding 10 mph in the same direction of travel and in the same lane.

Beginning Oct. 01, 2021, motorcyclists in Montana will then be allowed to officially filter.
