Over the years, Yamaha has introduced a number of enduro motorcycles.  With the release of the 2024 model year WR450F and WR250F, Yamaha marks another milestone in off-road motorcycle development.  So, what’s new?

Engine

The WR450F and WR250F both use four-stroke engines, but they differ in displacement – 450 cc for the WR450F and 250 cc for the WR250F.  Both models use an inverted cylinder head and intake port, a design element originally adopted from Yamaha’s successful YZ motocross models.  This feature allows for improved throttle response and performance, although more specific details on the new models’ performance levels have not yet been released.

Chassis and frame

Both models have suspension optimized for off-road use.  The WR450F features a lower head tube that contributes to a lower center of gravity, while the frame geometry has been adjusted to provide greater frame flexibility.  These changes are believed to affect the bikes’ shock absorption and handling in varied off-road conditions.

Electronic control

A notable technological innovation is the integration of the Yamaha Power Tuner app, which allows wireless adjustment of engine settings via a smartphone.  A “Quick Tuning” function has been added to the app, allowing for faster tuning to specific conditions.  Furthermore, a traction control function is integrated, but its effectiveness and impact on driving performance is still subject to testing and analysis.

Design and ergonomics

The visual changes to the models are most noticeable in the slimmer side panels and fenders.  These changes were made to improve aerodynamics and cooling.  In addition, the more compact design should make it easier for the driver to adjust body position while driving, an aspect that is often critical in off-road scenarios.

Additional equipment and accessories

Yamaha offers a range of additional equipment and accessories for both models, including a lighting package, instruments and an enlarged fuel tank.  Additionally, there is a special collection of Yamaha Genuine Accessories that includes GYTR® performance parts.

Conclusion

The 2024 model year Yamaha WR450F and WR250F feature a number of technical and design innovations.  From the engine to the chassis and electronic controls, many elements have been revised or newly integrated.  Although exact performance data and independent tests are still pending, the changes offer interesting clues for professionals and enthusiasts interested in the development of enduro motorcycles.
