Ten years of “Hyper Naked”

A decade ago, Yamaha brought a breath of fresh air to the motorcycle world with the introduction of the MT-09.  With its unique design and powerful appearance, the model set itself apart from traditional Japanese motorcycle construction and brought the unconventional spirit of the “Dark Side of Japan” to the streets of the world.  This motorcycle was fundamentally different from its predecessors and, with its intense, torque-oriented performance and sharp-edged design, offered a whole new way of riding that has thrilled over 385,000 enthusiasts in Europe to date.

The evolution of the original: the MT-09 for 2024

The year 2024 not only marks an anniversary for the MT-09, but also the point of an evolutionary development.  With a revised look and improved functions, it continues the legacy of the first generation.  The clearly defined design removes any excess and celebrates the pure, raw charisma of the machine.  One of the most striking innovations is the redesigned fuel tank, which not only visually characterizes the design, but also ergonomically optimizes the interaction between rider and bike.  It improves weight distribution and contributes to an even more direct riding experience.  The newly developed, separate seat bench unit reinforces this effect and, in addition to improved ergonomics, also offers more individual adjustment to different rider statures.  In addition, the position of the handlebars and footrests on the MT-09 has been specifically modified to enable an even more active and committed riding position.  These changes are aimed at strengthening the connection between rider and machine and enabling a more intuitive riding experience, where every movement, every corner and every acceleration moment is experienced more intensely.

The MT-09 SP: top performance meets racetrack-ready technology

The MT-09 SP is the spearhead of performance for Yamaha in 2024, designed specifically for those who don’t want to compromise on both road and track performance.  In addition to the improved suspension components and brakes, which are the cornerstones of the SP version, a new Brembo radial master cylinder ensures more precise braking manoeuvres and optimized feedback.

The third-generation quickshifter enables lightning-fast upshifts and downshifts without clutch actuation, which is particularly advantageous for fast lap times on the racetrack.  The new Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S23 M tires are the result of a close collaboration between Yamaha and Bridgestone and have been specially developed for the MT-09 SP to guarantee optimum grip on both wet and dry surfaces.

Ergonomics and operability have also been further optimized with adjustable brake and clutch levers that allow individual adaptation to the rider’s preferences and hand size.

Brembo Stylema brake callipers and premium suspension elements

The MT-09 SP combines sensational performance with precise vehicle control.  The implementation of the latest Brembo monobloc “Stylema” calipers further strengthens this connection.  These state of the art calipers utilize a more compact design, resulting in reduced weight and improved rigidity.  This leads to precise brake force metering and increased braking performance thanks to the larger piston diameters.  The result is a noticeable increase in braking performance, which is particularly beneficial on the racetrack, but also in everyday road traffic.

The MT-09 SP also focuses on quality and performance when it comes to the suspension elements.  The SP-exclusive suspension components – a 41 mm KYB fork with a Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coating and a high-quality Öhlins shock absorber – are fully adjustable and specially designed for a higher spring rate, which offers the rider an increased level of stability and comfort during sporty riding.

Customizable riding modes for the 2024 Yamaha MT-09

The 2024 Yamaha MT-09 will be equipped with advanced Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) modes that allow you to adjust engine performance and fine-tune electronic assistance systems such as traction control and slide control.  Riders can choose between the standard SPORT, STREET and RAIN modes as well as the option of two individual CUSTOM settings to customize the handling of the 890 cc CP3 engine to their preferences.

The MT-09 SP also offers exclusive TRACK modes that allow four special riding profiles to be configured for specific racing conditions.  Among other things, these modes allow the engine braking force and steering to be adjusted, with provision also made for deactivating the rear ABS for use on the racetrack.

Settings can be made directly on the motorcycle or via the MyRide app, which allows the configurations to be transferred via smartphone.  The integrated 6-axis IMU ensures a lean angle-dependent response of the assistance systems, and the Back Slip Regulator (BSR) is deactivated in TRACK modes for optimized performance on the racetrack.  The new modes and the 5-inch TFT color display, which offers a special TRACK view, are just some of the technical refinements that set the MT-09 SP apart.

Keyless freedom with the Smart Key System

The Smart Key System is one of the most advanced comfort functions of the MT-09 SP, which simplifies the riding experience with keyless access to the motorcycle.

Racing flair with the exclusive Icon Performance color

The visual appeal is enhanced by the exclusive Icon Performance paint finish, which emphasizes the racing character and technological kinship with the R1M, Yamaha’s most advanced production motorcycle.

Availability and customization options

The MT-09 SP will be available from May 2024 in the eye-catching and exclusive Icon Performance color scheme.  The recommended retail price of the model will be announced in the near future.  In addition to these announcements, Yamaha is introducing a new range of modular original accessories that will allow owners to customize and personalize their motorcycles.  This range of accessories includes various attachments and functional components that allow the appearance and functionality of the motorcycle to be tailored to personal preferences, making the MT-09 SP an even more individual riding experience.
