Yamaha presents innovative electric and hybrid technology at the Japan Mobility Show 2025

Yamaha is presenting new approaches to electric mobility at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 in Tokyo. The focus is on models and systems that have been specially developed to offer a unique driving experience and improved everyday usability. A key theme is the characteristics of electric and hybrid drives, which offer high torque even at low speeds. This makes it possible to drive without a clutch, which is intended to simplify handling in particular.

New driving experience thanks to innovative drive concepts

According to Yamaha, the high torque of the electric motors creates a new form of acceleration feel even at low speeds. The company’s goal is to optimize the riding experience during both acceleration and deceleration. While conventional combustion engines produce what is known as the engine braking effect, the new drive systems have been specifically designed to create a pleasant deceleration feel in electric and hybrid models as well. Yamaha emphasizes that intensive work has gone into further developing this riding experience.

Data-driven development: Optimal tuning for supersport models

According to Yamaha, it has extensive data from the supersport sector. This experience is being used to determine the optimal values for the new models. The developers tested various parameters in advance to set clear target values and design the system accordingly.

Assistance when starting and shifting gears

A special feature of the new drive technology is the assistance when starting, especially when the engine is already running. Yamaha sees this as an advantage, as it reduces the risk of stalling. This makes everyday handling easier and can prevent riding errors such as stalling the engine.

Yamaha also promises advantages when shifting gears: if, for example, a gear is skipped when downshifting, the system ensures that sufficient drive power is still available. Even in the event of a shifting error—for example, if the rider shifts down to third or fourth gear instead of second—Yamaha says that the necessary power is maintained to continue driving without any problems. This is highlighted as one of the features of the new model.

“Triple Boost” system for exceptional performance

Yamaha is also highlighting a new technology called “Triple Boost.” This system combines an electric motor for acceleration, followed by the combustion engine as an additional power source, and another electric motor. This interaction is designed to provide particularly dynamic and powerful acceleration. According to Yamaha, the powerful start of the electric motor at the beginning and the subsequent response of the combustion engine in particular lead to a balanced and at the same time sporty driving experience.

The manufacturer emphasizes that this system can not only ensure smooth acceleration, but also particularly powerful acceleration depending on the driving situation.
