Triumph will apparently not be retiring the Thruxton name after all.  Instead, the model is set to make a comeback - but this time as a smaller offshoot in the 400cc class.  This development follows a successful collaboration between Triumph and the Indian motorcycle manufacturer Bajaj, which has already scored with the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X models.

A look at the new Thruxton 400

Now that a test vehicle of the new Thruxton 400 has been spotted in India, there are increasing indications that the market launch is imminent.  Visually, the new Thruxton 400 appears to adopt many of the design elements of its larger role model: a half front fairing, low clip-on handlebars and a short rear end with integrated grab handles for the passenger.

The only fly in the ointment: instead of classic spoked wheels, the machine comes with cast rims.  Although this should reduce production costs, it could disappoint purist café racer fans.  On the other hand, the aftermarket will certainly offer a quick remedy in this area.

The drive: 398cc single cylinder with solid performance values

As with its sister models, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X, the Thruxton 400 is also powered by a 398cc single-cylinder engine.  This delivers 39.5 hp (29.4 kW) and a torque of 37.5 Nm.  Compared to the large Thruxton RS with its powerful two-cylinder engine, the new version is likely to be significantly less brute.  Nevertheless, for an entry-level bike, these values offer more than enough power for city traffic and cross-country trips.

Global market launch likely

Triumph is expected to launch the Thruxton 400 on the Indian market first before offering it worldwide.  Given the success of the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X, it would be surprising if Triumph did not also market this model globally.  The Thruxton 400 could be particularly well received in markets such as the USA, where small motorcycles are becoming increasingly popular.

Conclusion: An attractive entry-level model with style

The new Thruxton 400 could develop into an exciting option for novice riders and lovers of classic designs.  With its striking café racer look and the tried and tested technology of the 400 series, it has the potential to appeal to a broad target group – from beginners to experienced riders looking for a stylish second motorcycle.
