The third generation of the Founds family prepares for its TT debut

The Isle of Man TT Races are about to witness a special family milestone: The Founds family, renowned for their long-standing tradition in sidecar racing, will be joined on the grid by third-generation rookie Rhys Gibbons.  The 20-year-old will compete alongside his uncle Alan Founds, a two-time podium finisher in 2016 and 2019.  Together they will be aiming for a top ten finish in Team Founds Racing on their LCR Yamaha after a challenging 2023 for Alan.

Challenges and hopes for 2024

After a difficult 2023, in which Alan almost had to retire due to his original co-driver being ruled out of the competition, he found a replacement in Colin Smyth who helped him to double-digit finishes.  Although no specific targets have been set for 2024, the hope for similarly positive results remains.

Family tradition continues

Alan and his brother Pete are following in the footsteps of their father Des, who took part in 29 TT races between 1981 and 1997.  Now Rhys, the grandson, will continue this family tradition on the famous 37.73 mile course.  Alan expressed his excitement about returning to the TT and the pride of continuing the family tradition.

Alan Founds on taking part with his nephew

Alan Founds shares his thoughts, “Rhys couldn’t wait to compete at the TT and after five years as a co-driver, now is the right time.”  He reflected on last year’s disappointment but is optimistic about the future and sees competing with Rhys as a perfect opportunity.

There is no pressure for Rhys as a rookie.  The aim is to settle in during the qualifiers and steadily improve over the course of the two weeks.  A few solid finishes are the focus, although top ten or even top five finishes would be considered fantastic successes.  However, the most important thing is that both finish safely.

Rhys has already spent a lot of time on the island to familiarize himself with the course and has continued to deepen his knowledge at home.  He has even been able to teach his uncle a new thing or two.

A proud moment for the Founds family

The debut of the third generation at the TT is a moment of pride for the entire Founds family.  The participation not only marks the continuation of an impressive family tradition in motorsport, but also the start of a new chapter for Rhys Gibbons, who will be competing enthusiastically and with the support of his family.
