Unveiling at the BMW Motorrad Days
On the evening of June 28, 2024, BMW Motorrad published a teaser image on its social media channels. The image shows the characteristic X-shaped LED headlights of the BMW R 1300 GS, supplemented by two additional side headlights. The motorcycle appears wider and larger overall and is equipped with protective bars. Everything points to the fact that this is the new BMW R 1300 GS Adventure.
The official unveiling will take place at the BMW Motorrad Days in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. BMW Motorrad announced the following about the teaser image: “One of the highlights of this year’s BMW Motorrad Days is… on July 5, at 5:00 pm you will find out more…”. This suggests that the presentation of the new model will be one of the highlights of the event.
Homologation data
With the homologation of the BMW R 1300 GS Adventure on May 31, 2024 in Switzerland, most of the technical details are now known. The new Adventure version of the BMW R 1300 GS brings with it some interesting innovations and differences. Here are the most important information and specifications of the new BMW R 1300 GS Adventure.
Differences between the R 1300 GS and R 1300 GS Adventure
The new BMW R 1300 GS Adventure differs from the already familiar R 1300 GS in a number of ways. One striking difference is the weight: at 271 kg ready to ride, the Adventure is 21 kg heavier than the R 1300 GS. This increase in weight is partly due to the larger tank and the more robust design, which is optimized for long adventure rides.
Performance data and top speed
Both models share the new 1300cc boxer engine, which produces 145 hp (107 kW) at 7,750 rpm and offers a maximum torque of 149 Nm at 6,500 rpm. Despite identical performance values, the Adventure’s top speed of 220 km/h is 5 km/h lower than that of the R 1300 GS. This is probably due to the higher weight and the aerodynamic differences.
ASA automated gearshift system
A remarkable innovation is the new automatic transmission, called ASA (Automatic Shift Assistant). This system allows the driver to drive without a clutch lever and to select different shift modes depending on the driving conditions. This is similar to Honda’s DCT system and makes the R 1300 GS Adventure particularly comfortable and easy to ride, especially on long tours.
Dimensions and overall height
Interestingly, the new Adventure is shorter than its predecessor. With an overall length of 2,208 mm, it is 4 mm shorter than the R 1300 GS and even 62 mm shorter than the R 1250 GS Adventure. Despite the shorter length, the overall height of the new Adventure is impressive: between 1,538 mm and 1,588 mm, which indicates a new, higher windshield and a reinforced chassis.
Payload and weight distribution
The R 1300 GS Adventure can carry up to 20 kg more than the standard version, allowing a maximum total weight of 485 kg. This corresponds to the maximum weight of the current R 1250 GS Adventure. To cope with this higher load, a new, reinforced rear frame is required, which improves weight distribution and allows a maximum load of 337 kg on the rear axle.
Tank capacity and range
While the exact tank capacity of the new GSA is not yet known, it can be assumed that it will be around 30 liters, similar to the R 1250 GS Adventure. This enables longer trips without frequent refueling stops, a great advantage for adventure trips.
Tires and chassis
BMW remains true to the proven wheel sizes on the new GSA. The combination of 120/70 R19 at the front and 170/60 R17 at the rear remains unchanged. A trend towards larger 21-inch front wheels, as found on competitor models such as the Triumph Tiger 1200 or the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R, is not being pursued.
Market launch and price
With the successful homologation, nothing stands in the way of the market launch of the BMW R 1300 GS Adventure. A presentation and sales launch are planned for late summer or early fall 2024, possibly as early as July at the BMW Motorrad Days in Garmisch. In terms of price, the new Adventure will probably be priced above the R 1250 GS Adventure, which is currently available from 19,950 euros. It is to be expected that the new R 1300 GS Adventure will not cost less than 20,000 euros.
Conclusion
The new BMW R 1300 GS Adventure comes with numerous improvements and innovations that make it an exciting choice for adventure riders. With increased performance, innovative automatic transmission and robust design, it is ideally equipped for long and demanding tours.
