The beginnings of the problem and BMW’s response
BMW began delivering the R 1300 GS at the end of 2023, but quickly encountered a serious problem. There was at least one case of uncontrolled activation of the starter motor, which led to overheating, smoke development and fire damage to the motorcycle. This happened to our colleagues at 1000PS on their test bike. Quickly disconnecting the battery prevented the worst from happening.
BMW reacted immediately by suspending deliveries and launching a “service campaign” – a recall for the affected models. According to an initial statement from BMW in November 2023, the problem lay in damage to the plastic coating of the starter relay, which occurred sporadically during initial assembly. This could allow moisture into the interior and cause the relay to fail.
Persistent problems despite initial measures
At the time, 854 motorcycles in Germany and 85 in Austria were affected. BMW assured that only fault-free models had been delivered since November 6, 2023. The majority of the affected vehicles had not yet been delivered or registered at that time, apart from some demonstration models, which meant that end customers were not really affected.
Situation in January 2024: Ongoing safety risks
Despite BMW’s efforts, further incidents occurred by the end of January 2024, this time involving stationary and even moving motorcycles. In a more recent statement, BMW emphasized that the starter relays on all vehicles will be replaced before delivery. Customers who already own an R 1300 GS will be informed of the situation and asked to take part in the service campaign. Since January 16, 2024, only vehicles without the known problem have been delivered, BMW assures.
