Suzuki presents the new DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM models, which are set to take a significant step forward in terms of versatility, performance and design.  As the successor to the popular DR-Z400 series, which first appeared in 2000, the new models have been extensively redesigned to be ideally equipped for both on-road and off-road use.  With a modern design, powerful assistance systems and equipment designed to appeal to both beginners and experienced riders, the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM offer a wide range of applications.

Design and orientation of the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM

As a dual-sport model, the DR-Z4S is aimed at riders who like to switch between off-road and on-road riding and are looking for a motorcycle that masters both with ease.  The “Ready 4 Anything” concept describes the versatility of the model, which is designed to cut a fine figure on forest tracks and uneven terrain as well as in the city.

The DR-Z4SM, on the other hand, focuses on riding fun on the road and in supermoto style.  Under the motto “Your Streets. Your Playground.”, it is intended to be the ideal model for urban adventurers who want to enjoy the thrills of the street and supermoto world.

 

The engine: Powerful and efficient

At the heart of the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM is an updated 398 cc single-cylinder engine with four valves and DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft), built on a liquid-cooled base and designed for smooth power delivery throughout the rev range.  By introducing a ride-by-wire system and new injection technology with ten injectors, Suzuki achieves precise injection control for more efficient combustion and lower fuel consumption.  Two spark plugs per cylinder are also designed to improve combustion and help reduce emissions.

  • Displacement: 398 cm³
  • Power: 38 hp (37.3 hp, 28 kW) at 8000 rpm
  • Torque: 37 Nm at 6500 rpm
  • Fuel consumption: approx. 3.4 – 3.5 l/100 km (equivalent to 28.4 – 29.4 km/l)

 

The introduction of the electronically controlled 42 mm throttle body helps to fine-tune the engine’s response to the rider’s needs.  Thanks to Ride-by-Wire, it is possible to adjust the throttle response depending on the selected driving situation, which should provide more control, especially off-road and on winding roads.  The system is also designed to meet Euro 5+ emission standards, making the models more environmentally friendly and compliant with the latest legal requirements.

 

Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.): Support for driving comfort and control

Both models feature the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.), which is equipped with several driving assistance systems designed to enhance driving comfort and safety.  Key features include:

  • Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS): the SDMS offers three different modes to adapt the power delivery to the respective road or off-road conditions. Mode A provides a direct and sporty power delivery, Mode B delivers a balanced setting for everyday riding, and Mode C offers a smoother throttle response for slippery or challenging off-road sections.
  • Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS): The traction control system can be set to different riding modes to improve control on different surfaces. In addition to two road settings, there is also a special “Gravel” mode, which ensures better traction on loose surfaces and adapts the throttle response to the conditions.
  • ABS: Both models have an ABS system that can be configured differently depending on the model. On the DR-Z4S, the ABS can be switched off completely on both wheels to make off-road use easier.  On the DR-Z4SM, on the other hand, only the rear wheel ABS can be switched off, which suits the Supermoto riding style.

 

Frame and chassis: For stability and flexibility

In order to meet the requirements of the dual-sport and supermoto sector, both models have been equipped with a new twin-spar steel frame.  This frame combines high stability with a flexibility that is designed to absorb shocks on uneven surfaces, which ensures greater comfort, especially on long journeys.  A lightweight aluminum seat frame and a swing arm also contribute to improved handling.

The DR-Z4S was specially designed for off-road riding and has a long-stroke suspension with 280 mm travel at the front and 296 mm at the rear.  The suspension travel of the DR-Z4SM is slightly shorter at 260 mm at the front and 277 mm at the rear and is designed for fast, agile maneuvers on the road.  The adjustment of the suspension enables precise control that can be adapted to the respective riding style and track conditions.

  • Front wheel: 21 inch (DR-Z4S), 17 inch (DR-Z4SM)
  • Rear wheel: 18 inch (DR-Z4S), 17 inch (DR-Z4SM)
  • Seat height: DR-Z4S: 920 mm, DR-Z4SM: 890 mm
  • Ground clearance: DR-Z4S: 300 mm, DR-Z4SM: 260 mm
  • Weight: DR-Z4S: 151 kg (approx. 333 lbs), DR-Z4SM: 154 kg (approx. 340 lbs)
  • Fuel tank: 8.7 liters

 

Tires and brakes: For different areas of use

The tires of both models have been specifically matched to the respective application.  The DR-Z4S is equipped with IRC GP-410 Dual Purpose tires, which were specially developed for off-road use and are designed to provide good traction even on unpaved roads.  The DR-Z4SM is fitted with Dunlop SPORTMAX Q5A tires, which are designed for use on asphalt and in the supermoto sector and should offer good grip in dry and wet conditions.  Both models have disc brakes with diameters of 270 mm (DR-Z4S) and 310 mm (DR-Z4SM) at the front and 240 mm at the rear, which should provide reliable braking power.

 

Design and equipment: Minimalist and functional

The design of the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM stands out with a clear, minimalist design that focuses on functionality and modern styling.  An LED headlight unit, which combines both the low beam and high beam in one projector, ensures high visibility at night.  The model is also equipped with LED indicators and an LED rear light, which underlines the modern look.

The new LCD screen offers a wide range of information, including speed, fuel level, gear indicator, time and modes for the SDMS and traction control system.  Ergonomic handlebar controls and a robust seat cushion are designed to increase comfort on long rides.

Suzuki offers various color options: The DR-Z4S is available in “Champion Yellow No. 2”, which is reminiscent of Suzuki’s motocross heritage, as well as in a classic white.  The DR-Z4SM, on the other hand, comes in “Sky Gray”, an urban color scheme that combines modern elegance with a rugged touch.
