What is the problem?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there is a possibility that the shift lever mount fasteners could loosen over time. In a worst-case scenario, the shifter could completely separate from the motorcycle, making it impossible to change gears. This could not only impair control of the motorcycle, but also increase the risk of an accident in certain riding situations. Such a defect can be particularly dangerous when cornering or in the event of sudden changes in speed.
Which models are affected?
Honda states that a total of 507 units of the 2024 model worldwide could be affected by this problem. Whether both the standard version with manual transmission and the new version with Honda e-Clutch are affected is not clear from the information available so far. Owners of a CB650R or CBR650R from model year 2024 should therefore check whether their motorcycle is covered by the recall.
What measures are being taken?
Honda has announced that the affected motorcycles will be checked and repaired free of charge in the workshops. To this end, the gearshift mount will be replaced with an improved version. Owners will be informed of the recall in writing, with notifications to be sent out by April 21, 2025 at the latest, according to Honda.
However, affected riders do not have to wait for the official letter. Anyone who owns a 2024 CB650R or CBR650R can contact an authorized Honda dealer immediately to clarify whether their motorcycle is affected and have the necessary repair carried out.
Conclusion
Even though Honda is known for its reliable motorcycles, technical problems can occasionally occur. Although this recall only affects a relatively small number of motorcycles, the potential risk should not be underestimated. Anyone who owns a CB650R or CBR650R from model year 2024 should take the opportunity to have the faulty gearshift mount replaced as soon as possible to avoid potential safety risks.
