On July 23, 2024, Indian Motorcycle announced a safety recall for certain 2024 touring models.  The reason is a problem with the rear shock absorber struts, which do not meet the manufacturer's specifications and could fail under load.  The recall originates in the Americas, but it is possible that motorcycles in other regions are also affected as they are usually produced in the same factories for sale worldwide.

Background to the recall

As early as May 2024, Indian Motorcycle received reports of problems with the shock struts reported by dealers and internal testing.  Although no accidents have been reported as of July 23, 2024, Indian has decided to conduct a safety recall to minimize potential risks.

Measures to remedy the situation

On July 15, 2024, Indian stopped delivery of the affected models and announced that it would only resume delivery as soon as spare parts were available.  These replacement parts have passed extensive endurance testing to ensure compliance with specifications.

Indian will notify its dealers of the recall on July 30, 2024 and plans to notify owners of the affected motorcycles on or about August 14, 2024.  Dealers will receive detailed instructions on how to replace the defective parts with new ones.  Owners can have the replacement performed at their local authorized Indian dealer free of charge.  Customers who have already paid for repairs may be eligible for reimbursement if they can provide the appropriate receipts.
