New electric motor delivers up to 1,000 hp – based on a motorcycle drive system

Electric motors continue to impress with their high power density.  Enormous horsepower figures can be achieved with compact dimensions.  A current example of this is the new in-stroke motor from Donut Lab, which was presented at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2025 in Las Vegas.  With a weight of just 40 kg (88 lbs) and an output of almost 1,000 hp (around 735 kW), the motor impressively demonstrates how much potential there is in small, electric drives.

From motorcycle technology to high-performance machine

The new motor from Donut Lab is based on similar technology to the drive unit already used in the TS models from Verge Motorcycles.  While the TS bikes boast around 200 hp (147 kW) and a range of up to 370 km (230 miles), the new engine takes the performance level to a whole new level.  However, at 856 hp (630 kW), it is far too powerful for use in motorcycles – but it could have a big impact in other vehicle categories, such as UTVs, ATVs or even snowmobiles.

Power density and possible applications

The engine weighs just 40 kg (88 lbs), giving it an impressive power-to-weight ratio.  The high power density could help future electric vehicles offer similar or even better performance than current combustion vehicles.  A scaled motor with around 300 hp (220 kW) could be used in a Polaris RZR or a Can-Am Outlander, for example.

The aim of Donut Lab is to provide manufacturers with a fully developed system that includes the motor, battery, control system and software.  This should reduce development and production costs while improving reliability and ease of maintenance.

Future prospects

According to Donut Lab, the company’s focus is on developing innovative solutions that offer both performance and simplicity.  The company’s website states: “Backed by a team of visionary engineers, designers and industry experts, Donut Lab is focused on developing solutions that redefine simplicity, increase performance and minimize maintenance.”  The company works closely with partners from the automotive, aviation and robotics sectors to offer versatile electric drive solutions.

Conclusion

Donut Lab has unveiled an exciting development with its new in-stroke motor that has the potential to transform various vehicle categories.  While the current motor is oversized for motorcycles, a smaller version could offer interesting possibilities for electric two-wheelers and other recreational vehicles.
