A deep look into the problem
The core of the problem lies in the programming of the vehicle control software, specifically in the Vehicle Supervisory Controller (VSC), which can shut down the entire drive system if certain voltage limits are exceeded. This unexpected shutdown of the drivetrain can lead to a complete loss of drive power, which poses a high risk, especially while driving. The affected motorcycles were produced between July 26, 2023 and January 30, 2024, with approximately 523 vehicles affected in the U.S. Every 2024 model of the S2 Del Mar should therefore be considered affected.
As motorcycles are usually manufactured in one plant for worldwide sale, other markets could also be affected.
What is LiveWire doing?
To fix the problem, LiveWire has provided an over-the-air (OTA) software update, which has been available since February 6, 2024. This update is intended to correct the incorrect voltage limits in the TCU (Telematics Control Unit) and thus eliminate the risk of a sudden shutdown. Vehicles manufactured after the production period are not affected by this recall.
Dealers were notified of this recall between February 29 and March 4, 2024, while owners of the affected motorcycles should be notified between March 5 and March 12, 2024. There is no cost to owners, whether they choose to update via OTA or take their motorcycle to an authorized LiveWire dealer.
How can owners react?
Affected owners are encouraged to immediately contact LiveWire Customer Service at 1-855-387-4337 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for further instructions. The LiveWire callback number is 1001, while the NHTSA campaign number is 24V-149.
