Lifetime driving ban for British motorcyclist after 47 overtaking maneuvers in the Gotthard Tunnel

A British motorcyclist has been banned from driving for life in Switzerland after performing a total of 47 illegal overtaking maneuvers in the Gotthard Tunnel. In addition to this measure, according to media reports, he must pay a fine of around €12,690 (approx. CHF 13,600 or £11,000). The public prosecutor's office is also investigating serious traffic offenses.

The Gotthard Tunnel: narrow, long, and strictly regulated

At just under 17 kilometers long, the Gotthard Road Tunnel is one of the longest road tunnels in Europe. Due to its special structural features—one lane in each direction with continuous double line markings—overtaking is strictly prohibited throughout the entire tunnel. This is not only for the sake of traffic flow, but primarily for safety. Accordingly, the facility is equipped with numerous cameras for traffic monitoring.

On August 30, 2025, the British motorcyclist nevertheless decided against the detour via the Gotthard Pass and opted for the faster route through the tunnel – apparently in a hurry or out of frustration with the slow traffic. In doing so, he overtook two trucks and 45 cars during the passage, which ultimately proved fatal.

Every violation costs – and it costs a lot

According to the Swiss catalog of fines, every single overtaking maneuver in the tunnel is punishable by a fine of around 270 Swiss francs. With 47 violations, the amount adds up to around 12,690 euros (13,600 CHF / approx. 11,000 GBP).

The Uri cantonal police stopped the man immediately after he exited the tunnel – the numerous cameras had clearly documented his driving. The authorities immediately initiated proceedings.

Suspicion of unfitness to drive

In addition to the traffic violations, the driver faces another serious accusation: he is alleged to have been in an unfit condition. According to the Federal Road Traffic Act, this can have several causes – such as fatigue, the influence of alcohol, drug use, or the intake of certain medications.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the man was arrested. The only thing that is certain is that the Swiss authorities responded with a lifetime driving ban for the entire country – a measure that is rarely applied and underlines the severity of the violations.

Conclusion

The case illustrates how seriously Switzerland takes its traffic regulations – especially in safety-relevant areas such as the Gotthard Tunnel. The combination of multiple violations and suspected unfitness to drive not only resulted in a substantial fine, but also in a permanent ban from Swiss roads. A drastic measure, but one that the authorities clearly deemed necessary.
