Lewis Hamilton: From Formula 1 champion to MotoGP team owner?

Rumors are circulating that seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton may be planning a switch to the MotoGP world.  According to reports, he is interested in taking over the satellite team Ducati Gresini Racing.

Origin of the rumors

According to the website “The Race”, the rumors began at the start of the Dutch TT weekend in Assen.  While nothing official has been communicated so far, several people familiar with the team’s operations have confirmed the speculation.  A member of Hamilton’s inner circle is said to have been present at the event, possibly with the intention of evaluating the team and its takeover possibilities.

Background to Gresini Racing

Gresini Racing is based in Faenza, Italy, and is currently managed by Nadia Padovani, the widow of team founder Fausto Gresini.  Fausto Gresini, who founded the team in 1991 and made it a force to be reckoned with in the MotoE, Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP classes, passed away in 2021 as a result of Covid-19. Under Padovani’s leadership, the team has continued to achieve strong results, particularly through the performances of brothers Alex and Marc Marquez, who are regularly found at the front of the field.

Hamilton’s passion for motorcycles

Hamilton has long been an avid motorcycle fan and is an experienced rider himself.  He owns an impressive collection of motorcycles and has even been involved in the design of a limited edition MV Agusta.  Hamilton’s passion for motorcycles dates back to his childhood.  In an interview, he explained: “I’ve always loved motorcycles…  When I was younger, I wanted to race motorcycles, but my dad wouldn’t let me – he said they were too dangerous…  He took me to four wheels instead of two.  It was the right decision, because if I had ridden when Vale was around, I wouldn’t have been as successful.”

Commercial considerations

In addition to his passion for motorcycles, Hamilton’s interest in Gresini Racing could also be commercial.  Formula 1 rights holder Liberty Media is in the process of acquiring the MotoGP rights from Dorna, creating a link between the two sports.  A takeover of Gresini Racing by one of the most famous and successful racers of all time could be an attractive prospect for both Liberty Media and Hamilton.

Hamilton already has links with several brands that sponsor him and other riders and teams in MotoGP.  It would therefore stand to reason that he could convince some of these sponsors to move to his own MotoGP team.  Such commercial synergies could reduce the financial risk of a takeover and increase the chances of success.

Future prospects and financial considerations

The timing for a possible takeover could be favorable.  Gresini Racing currently uses 2023 Ducati bikes, but new regulations from 2027 could level the playing field.  A takeover before these changes could prove to be a wise financial decision.

Additionally, Hamilton could count on the support of current Mercedes team sponsors such as Petronas and Monster Energy, which would further mitigate the financial risk.  Given Liberty Media’s track record in increasing the popularity of Formula 1, acquiring a MotoGP team now could be one of the best investments one can make.

Conclusion

Lewis Hamilton’s potential plans to take over Gresini Racing offer an exciting prospect for the future of MotoGP racing.  Whether this will actually happen and what impact it will have remains to be seen.  What is clear, however, is that the combination of Hamilton’s passion for motorcycles and the commercial possibilities of this venture could represent an interesting development in motorsport.
