KTM gives outlook on MotoGP future: First 850cc engine tested

Just under ten years after entering MotoGP, KTM has taken another significant step in its motorsport history. The new 850cc engine concept for the 2027 season was tested on the test bench for the first time in Mattighofen, Austria. The reason for this is the upcoming technical regulations that will apply in the premier class from 2027.

Technical innovations: 100% non-fossil fuel

The new drive unit is specially designed to comply with the regulations that will come into force in 2027 and runs exclusively on non-fossil fuel. There was palpable excitement in the engine test facility in Mattighofen during the first test run. CEO Gottfried Neumeister and the motorsport development team were also present to witness the first performance data of the new 850cc engine.

 

Review: KTM’s development in MotoGP

Since its debut with a wildcard in 2016, KTM has been able to hold its own in the Grand Prix field. Its successes include race wins, podium finishes with a total of six different riders, and a successful collaboration with the Red Bull KTM Tech3 team. MotoGP has now become a central component of the Austrian manufacturer’s factory involvement and has contributed to the brand’s global recognition.

Pit Beirer, Director of KTM Motorsport, explained: “I am extremely happy that we were able to launch the future MotoGP engine as early as September 2025. We are right on schedule to have the complete motorcycle ready to ride very soon. All our expertise from the last few years of MotoGP participation has gone into this engine. I am very confident that this masterpiece will set new standards from the 2027 season onwards. My thanks go to the entire team for their tremendous commitment.”

 

Outlook: The road to the new MotoGP generation

With the first test run of the new 850cc engine, KTM is taking an important step toward the next MotoGP generation. It remains to be seen whether the new engine will actually set the standard. Development is still in its early stages, but the first test runs clearly show that KTM is well positioned for the future of MotoGP.
