The Tourist Trophy 2025 kicked off its first qualifying session in perfect conditions.  The focus was particularly on Honda rider Dean Harrison, who dominated the Superbike category with a record lap of 133.069 mph (214.219 km/h) – the fastest lap ever set on an opening evening of TT qualifying.

Superbike & Superstock: Harrison and Todd set the pace

The session began promptly at 18:30 with an even split of riders between Superbike and Superstock machines.  In the Superbike category, Peter Hickman, John McGuinness MBE, David Johnson and Dean Harrison, among others, took to the track.  At the same time, Michael Dunlop, Davey Todd and James Hillier led the field of Superstock riders.

Harrison opened the session with a strong first lap of 130.897 mph (210.592 km/h), but on his second lap he went one better and set an impressive 133.069 mph – a new benchmark for the qualifying opener.  Peter Hickman (131.076 mph / 210.954 km/h) and Michael Dunlop (129.975 mph / 209.159 km/h) lined up behind him.

In the Superstock class, Davey Todd showed his class on the BMW from Monster Energy by 8TEN Racing.  With 131.231 mph (211.215 km/h), he set the fastest time ahead of Dominic Herbertson (129.257 mph / 208.080 km/h) and Paul Jordan (128.055 mph / 206.032 km/h).  Harrison also confirmed his versatility here, setting the second-fastest time in the Superstock field at 131.098 mph (211.002 km/h).

Among the newcomers, Mitch Rees (119.775 mph / 192.719 km/h) and Barry Burrell (114.359 mph / 184.025 km/h) impressed with respectable laps.

Supersport & Supertwin: Dunlop and Hodson prevail

At 19:20, the Supersport and Supertwin classes took over the legendary Mountain Course.  Michael Dunlop dominated the Supersport classification with a best time of 127.181 mph (204.732 km/h) on the Milwaukee Ducati. He was closely followed by Dean Harrison (126.436 mph / 203.528 km/h) and Davey Todd (124.238 mph / 199.945 km/h).

Peter Hickman (124.085 mph / 199.701 km/h) and Mike Browne (123.998 mph / 199.563 km/h) also put in solid performances.  The gaps in the field were small, the competition high.

In the Supertwin class, it was Rob Hodson who took the lead with a lap of 119.521 mph (192.359 km/h) on his SMT Racing Paton.  Stefano Bonetti (116.579 mph / 187.615 km/h) and Barry Furber (116.050 mph / 186.766 km/h) had previously led for a short time.  Michael Dunlop (119.068 mph / 191.636 km/h) and Mike Browne (118.579 mph / 190.849 km/h) followed Hodson closely, while Peter Hickman finished sixth with 116.718 mph (187.836 km/h).

Sidecars: Crowe brothers in front – fog shortens the session

The Sidecar category brought the evening to a close.  Ryan and Callum Crowe opened the session at 20:10 and set the fastest time at 118.797 mph (191.205 km/h).  The Founds/Walmsley duo followed with 115.370 mph (185.657 km/h), followed by Crawford/Hardie (113.742 mph / 183.077 km/h) and Blackstock/Lawrence (112.975 mph / 181.852 km/h).

The sidecar session was stopped after just one lap due to the gathering fog in the Snaefell Mountain area.

Outlook: Second qualifying session on Thursday

The second qualifying session is scheduled for Thursday, May 29 at 18:00.  With Harrison, Todd and Dunlop making a strong start, it is already clear that the 2025 Tourist Trophy promises top-class racing and thrilling battles for the podium places.
