The recall originates in the US, but as motorcycles are usually manufactured in one factory for worldwide sale, other markets could also be affected.
Affected models and scope of the recall
According to Indian, this problem affects around 11,648 motorcycles, which corresponds to the total number of potentially affected vehicles. The exact breakdown of affected models, including production dates and VIN ranges, will make it easier for owners to identify whether their vehicle is affected by the recall.
Cause of the recall
At the heart of the problem is a software error in the Bosch ABS 9.1M Plus module, which can cause the brake lights to illuminate seemingly at random. This happens when the difference in wheel speeds exceeds a programmed threshold, which can lead to confusion on the road and an increased risk of accidents. At the time the problem was reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were no known accidents or injuries associated with this defect.
Measures to correct the problem
An update to the ABS module software is required to correct this problem. Indian will instruct its dealer network accordingly and inform owners of the need for this free service. It is worth noting that all motorcycles that have left the factory since April 13, 2022 are already equipped with the correct software and are therefore not affected by this issue.
Further steps for owners
Notifications to dealers and owners are planned for February 14, 2024. Affected owners can contact Indian Motorcycle customer service at campaign number I-24-03 or contact the NHTSA at campaign number 24V-069 for more information and to take the necessary steps.
