Honda shows prototype of a 300cc Cafe Racer – What we know so far

Honda is causing a stir with a new 300cc cafe racer that has recently appeared in design registrations and type approval images.  The prototype offers a fresh, modern look and combines classic cafe racer elements with current technologies.  Here are the details that are known so far.

Engine and performance: a proven unit with adaptations

The prototype is based on the single-cylinder engine that is used in South America in models such as the CB300F Twister or the XR300L Tornado.  The air-cooled engine with 293.5cc, a bore of 77mm and a stroke of 63mm produces around 25 hp (18.4 kW) at 7,500 rpm and a torque of 26.4 Nm at 5,750 rpm in Brazil.

A special feature is the flexibility of the engine, which in South America can run on both gasoline and pure ethanol.  Such ethanol-powered engines are rare in Europe due to the strict Euro 5+ emissions regulations, which could be an indication that the model is primarily intended for markets outside Europe.

Frame and chassis: Solid base with new components

The frame comes from the CB300F Twister and consists of a backbone tubular steel frame.  For the prototype, however, this was supplemented with an upside-down fork, which could have been taken from the Indonesian version of the CB300F BigWing.  The rear suspension is supported by a monoshock.

The brake system is particularly striking.  The Cafe Racer has massive double disc brakes at the front – a significant upgrade over the standard model.  The design of the brakes appears to have been specially developed for this model, which indicates a sporty orientation.

Design and equipment: modern interpretation of a classic

The styling is based on classic cafe racers, but combines them with modern elements.  The fuel tank, the seat and the rear were specially designed for this prototype and give the motorcycle a unique look.  The front headlights appear to have been taken from the Honda Rebel 300 and feature four individual LEDs in a round housing.

The exhaust system, on the other hand, looks rather rudimentary and apparently does without silencing or a catalytic converter.  For series production, Honda would have to make adjustments here in order to meet modern emissions standards.

Target markets: focus on emerging markets

It is unlikely that this model will reach the European market in its current form.  The air-cooled design and the lack of a catalytic converter are obstacles to Euro 5+ approval.  Instead, Honda could target markets such as South America or Asia with this cafe racer, where the demand for affordable, stylish motorcycles with simple technology is high.

Conclusion: A prototype with potential

Although the model is at an early stage and some adjustments would be necessary, the prototype shows that Honda has recognized the growing popularity of cafe racers.  It remains to be seen whether an adapted version of the motorcycle will also be offered in Europe or North America.

Technical data (prototype):

  • Engine: single-cylinder, air-cooled, 293.5ccm
  • Power: 25 hp (18.4 kW) at 7,500 rpm
  • Torque: 26.4 Nm at 5,750 rpm
  • Frame: Tubular steel frame (backbone design)
  • Chassis: USD fork at the front, monoshock at the rear
