The fusion of two worlds
The Honda Grom is known for its small but charming 125 cc engine, which produces around 10 hp (7.5 kW). But in this particular case, YouTuber “The_StreetSweeper” decided to do something radically different: he swapped the original engine for the Desmodromic V-Twin engine from a Ducati Panigale 1199. This engine is capable of delivering a whopping 195 hp (143 kW) at 10,750 rpm – an incredible increase in performance that lifts the Grom into a whole new league.
The conversion process
In order to integrate the significantly larger Ducati engine into the small chassis of the Grom, extensive adaptation work was necessary. The upper frame segment of the Grom had to be removed to make room for the rear cylinder of the Ducati engine. In addition, a customized fuel tank was integrated into the extended swing arm. The swing arm itself was lengthened to improve control of the now significantly more powerful motorcycle.
The project also required the use of special components to cope with the new engine and the additional loads. These components include custom three-piece rims, Pirelli Diablo Corsa tires, a titanium Brembo brake set with four pistons and a larger front brake disc, and a Brembo titanium brake caliper for the rear wheel. In addition, special LS-ZR1 ignition coils originally developed for the Corvette were integrated into the system.
Challenges and adaptations
Despite the impressive progress, the conversion is not yet complete. One example of this is the adjustment of the chain, which still does not have enough play at one point and therefore needs to be extended. The installation of a second radiator is also planned in order to optimize the cooling of the powerful motor. It is currently being considered whether a customized radiator would be better suited to meet the aesthetic requirements.
Another interesting detail is the exhaust system, which was specially developed for this project. It is a two-piece system designed for serviceability. It is still unclear what the sound of the motorcycle will ultimately sound like, as the bike has not yet been launched at the current stage of the conversion.
A look into the future
Although this custom bike project is not yet complete, it has already caused quite a stir. The combination of the compact size of the Honda Grom and the enormous power of the Ducati Panigale engine makes this motorcycle a real eye-catcher. The builder plans to launch the bike soon and present it at various events to see the public’s reaction.
Conclusion
This project is an impressive example of how creative visions can be turned into reality. The fusion of the Honda Grom with a Ducati Panigale 1199 engine is certainly one of the most unusual custom bike projects to be realized in recent times. As this bike continues to be finalized and fine-tuned, it will be exciting to see how it performs on the road and at events.
