Honda E-VO: Honda’s first all-electric retro motorcycle in detail

With the E-VO, Honda is finally entering the high-performance electric motorcycle segment – and with a striking break in style: the machine combines modern e-mobility with a classic café racer look.  It was developed by the Chinese joint venture Wuyang-Honda.  It has been available in China since May 2025 under the model name WH8000D.  In addition to its retro look, the E-VO impresses above all with its extensive equipment and sophisticated technology.

Classic café racer design meets high-tech

Visually, the Honda E-VO is reminiscent of classic café racers from the 1970s: a round LED headlight with a half-shell, minimalist lines, handlebar end mirrors and a short, exposed rear end define the design.  However, a real high-tech package is concealed beneath the nostalgic fairing.  The adaptive headlights produce an impressive 45,000 candelas and are part of a lighting system based entirely on LEDs.  The controls are also illuminated, which is particularly helpful when riding at night.

Aluminum frame and high-torque mid-motor

The E-VO is based on a forged aluminum frame with a single-sided swingarm made of cast aluminum.  The centrally positioned electric motor delivers 15.3 kW (20.8 hp) in the standard version and 15.8 kW (21.5 hp) in the top version with three batteries.  The continuous output in both cases is 8 kW (10.9 hp), which puts the model in the 125cc class.  The drive is provided by a low-maintenance toothed belt from Continental.

According to Honda, the E-VO accelerates from 0 to 50 km/h in 2.8 seconds.  The top speed is 68 mph (around 109 km/h) or 75 mph (approx. 120 km/h), depending on the variant.  This also makes it suitable for short stretches of highway.

Two battery variants with interchangeable technology

Honda offers two battery configurations:

  • 2-battery version: 4.1 kWh, 74 V, 56 Ah – range approx. 120 km (75 miles), weight: 143 kg (approx. 315 lbs), charging time 1-1.5 hours (20-80 %), fast charging possible in 1 hour.
  • 3-battery version: 6.2 kWh, 84 Ah – range approx. 170 km (105 miles, WMTC), weight: 156 kg (approx. 344 lbs), charging time 1.5-2.5 hours, fast charging possible in 1.5 hours.

Both versions use a modular battery exchange system.  The batteries can be replaced in a very short time at appropriately equipped stations.

Chassis, ergonomics and dimensions

The chassis consists of an upside-down fork at the front and a central suspension strut at the rear.  The wheelbase is a compact 1,380 mm and the seat height is 765 mm.  With a ground clearance of 186 mm, even driving over obstacles is no problem.  The wheels are unusually sized: 16-inch with 110/70 tires at the front and 14-inch with 140/70 tires at the rear.

Disc brakes at the front and rear are assisted by a dual-channel ABS system.  The front brake lever can be adjusted in five positions.  As with many automatic scooters, it is operated via two hand levers.

High-end electronics: riding modes, connectivity and safety functions

The E-VO offers four riding modes: “Eco”, “Normal”, “Sport” and the mysterious “Thunderbolt” mode – the latter is intended to serve as a boost function.  There is also:

  • Traction control
  • Hill-hold function
  • Reverse gear
  • cruise control
  • “Stroller push” mode (for easy pushing when stationary)
  • Side stand lock to prevent riding when the stand is folded out

A 7-inch TFT color display with navigation function, Bluetooth connection, keyless go and a second small display round off the equipment.  A USB-A and a USB-C port in the smartphone compartment ensure connectivity on the move.

Two integrated cameras for a better overview

The integrated front and rear cameras are particularly innovative.  The reversing camera is linked to the display and digitally replaces the classic rear-view mirror.  If desired, video recordings can be saved – for example for driving documentation.

Robustly constructed for everyday use

According to Honda, the frame, suspension and central components have been tested in over a million vibration cycles.  This speaks for a high level of suitability for everyday use and durability – even under adverse conditions.  The dimensions are:

  • Length: 1,996 mm
  • Width: 755 mm
  • Height: 1,057 mm

Prices, market launch and driving license class

The E-VO will initially only be sold in China.  The entry-level version costs 29,999 yuan (around €3,700 / $4,000), the top-of-the-range version 36,999 yuan (around €4,500 / $5,000).  A launch in Europe has not yet been confirmed.  However, due to its continuous power output of less than 11 kW, it could be driven with an A1 driving license from the age of 16 or with the B196 car driving license supplement.
