Harley-Davidson recalls almost 42,000 motorcycles due to possible short circuit hazard

Harley-Davidson has initiated a voluntary recall in the USA for almost 42,000 motorcycles from the 2024 model year.  The Street Glide and Road Glide series and their CVO versions are affected.  The reason for the recall is potential damage to the wiring harness, which could lead to an electrical failure.  Such a problem could occur while riding, which significantly increases the risk of an accident.

Background and cause of the recall

On September 11, 2024, Harley-Davidson reported the recall to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).  The problem lies in the routing of the wiring harness, which can rub against the front corner of the crankcase.  Over time, this could damage the insulation of the cables and lead to a short circuit.  This short circuit would cause the 60 amp main fuse to fail, cutting power to the affected machine.  This could bring the Harley to a standstill while riding and significantly increase the risk of an accident.

Affected models and production periods

A total of 41,637 motorcycles from the Road Glide and Street Glide series are affected, including their CVO versions.  These motorcycles were produced between October 2023 and July 2024.  Harley-Davidson has already recognized the fault and has made a technical change since the end of July 2024.  An additional holder was installed to keep the wiring harness away from the dangerous contact point.

The affected models and their production periods are as follows

Model Production / period  / VIN range

2024 Harley-Davidson Street Glide (FLHX) / October 27, 2023 to July 9, 2024 /  1HD1KB710RB600560 to 1HD1KB715RB655554

2024 Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide (FLHXSE) / November 7, 2023 to July 18, 2024 /  1HD1PX62XRB950092 to 1HD1PX619RB961107

2024 Harley-Davidson Road Glide (FLTRX) / October 27, 2023 to July 18, 2024 /  1HD1KH722RB600555 to 1HD1KH713RB658116

2024 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide (FLTRXSE) / November 7, 2023 to July 16, 2024 /  1HD1TC613RB950088 to 1HD1TC619RB960771

2024 Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide ST (FLTRXSTSE) / November 2, 2023 to July 18, 2024 /  1HD1TL813RB950086 to 1HD1TL818RB961102

Measure taken by the manufacturer

For the affected motorcycles, the information of the owners was started on September 23, 2024.  Harley-Davidson advises all owners to visit their local authorized workshop to have the condition of the wiring harness checked.  The offer includes a free inspection and, if necessary, the installation of an additional bracket to secure the cable.  If the wiring harness is already damaged, it will be replaced with an extension and a holder will also be added.

The repair process in the workshop should take between 20 and 70 minutes, depending on the condition of the wiring harness.  In any case, there are no costs for the customer.

Insight into the sales figures

This recall also provides a rare insight into Harley-Davidson’s sales figures in the USA.  Of the total of 41,637 motorcycles affected:

  • – 19,914 units to the Road Glide,
  • – 15,736 units for the Street Glide,
  • – 1,471 units for the CVO Street Glide,
  • – 1,651 units for the CVO Road Glide,
  • – 2,865 units for the CVO Road Glide ST.

This recall only affects models produced and sold in the USA.  Harley-Davidson models produced for export, such as those with serial numbers beginning with “5HD”, are not yet included in the recall.
