Long-term goal: an electric motorcycle suitable for everyday use with Ducati DNA
The MotoE project was originally launched by Ducati to build up internal knowledge in the field of electric drive technologies. The aim is to one day be able to offer a roadworthy electric motorcycle that meets the standards and values of the Borgo Panigale brand. The focus is on performance, weight, and range—three factors in which electric motorcycles have so far lagged behind conventional combustion engines.
8.2 kilograms weight savings—but still not enough
Over the past three years, Ducati has collected a wealth of data from racing in MotoE. A total of 18 riders provided valuable feedback on the behavior of the V21L under real racing conditions. These findings were directly incorporated into the further development of the prototype. Progress has been made particularly in the area of battery development: the cell types used to date have been further optimized, resulting in a reduction in battery weight of 8.2 kg. Despite this reduction, the weight of the machine remains a decisive disadvantage compared to conventional racing motorcycles.
Development in collaboration with Audi, PowerCo, and QuantumScape
To solve this problem, Ducati is cooperating with several partners within the Volkswagen Group, including Audi, PowerCo, and battery specialist QuantumScape. The goal: battery packs with significantly higher energy density to reduce weight and improve range and power output.
The V21L prototype presented at the IAA is Ducati’s first motorcycle equipped with solid-state batteries. These are considered a promising technology for the future, as they are potentially lighter and safer, and enable faster charging and higher capacities. The current state of development represents an early but important step – however, there is no talk of series production yet.
Ducati stays on the ball – regardless of the racing calendar
Even though MotoE racing is on hold for the time being, Ducati does not want to let the expertise it has gained go to waste. Research is continuing and should eventually lead to the market launch of an electric motorcycle suitable for everyday use. There are no concrete statements about a production model as yet. The V21L therefore remains purely a development vehicle – but one that points the way forward for the coming years.
