BMW recalls the R 1300 GS in America because of suitcases

On March 21, 2024, BMW of North America, LLC issued a safety warning for some of their 2024 R 1300 GS model motorcycles.  The reason for this recall is the side cases that are offered as accessories.  There is a possibility that the lid of these cases could come off while riding or that objects could fall out, which could lead to accidents.

Problem with the side cases

On the affected units, the hooks of the case lock may not engage properly in the lock.  This can lead to the lid of the case opening or even coming loose.  Up to 1,600 motorcycles could be affected by this problem.

Which side cases are affected?

The recall is listed under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) campaign number 24E029.  The accessories with part numbers 77 41 9 444 361/362 are affected.

Important information for owners

If you are the owner of an affected motorcycle with a side case with the above part numbers, you should contact BMW Customer Service at 1-800-525-7417.  In addition, the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline is available at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or you can visit www.nhtsa.gov.

(Contact information for the U.S. market)

Authorized BMW dealers will repair the locking mechanism and side case hinges free of charge.  Notification letters to owners are expected to be mailed by May 13, 2024.
