BMW is recalling the motorcycles of the type S 1000 XR and S 1000 R to the workshops in North America.  The recall involves models from 2020 to 2023 that have undergone a software update.  This update can result in the so-called Front Wheel Lift-off Assist, i.e. the "Wheelie Control", being reset without indicating this. This can lead to unexpected driving behavior and thus increase the risk of an accident.

BMW is recalling the motorcycles of the type S 1000 XR and S 1000 R to the workshops in North America.  The recall involves models from 2020 to 2023 that have undergone a software update.  This update can result in the so-called Front Wheel Lift-off Assist, i.e. the “Wheelie Control”, being reset without indicating this. This can lead to unexpected driving behavior and thus increase the risk of an accident.

Details of the recall: More than 750 BMW motorcycles affected in North America, other markets may be affected

Note: The recall affects the U.S. market, but other markets may be affected as motorcycles are often produced in a plant for global sale.  The following recall numbers and phone numbers apply to North America!

A total of 754 motorcycles are affected in North America, representing 100 percent of the local market.  These are 270 S 1000 R models from 2022 to 2023 and 484 S 1000 XR models that have received a software update at authorized BMW dealers.

Riding Modes Pro: Cause of the problem

The affected models are equipped with Riding Modes Pro, these include a rider customizable mode called Dynamic Pro.  The factory setting for this mode disables the wheelie control parameter.  The rider can usually select different levels here to adjust the settings to their liking.

The problem occurs when a dealer-only software update is applied.  This resets the Dynamic Pro mode to the factory settings without informing the driver, so the wheelie control is deactivated.  If the rider is now expecting assistance against front wheel lift-off while riding, which is no longer available due to the update, an unexpected wheelie could cause an accident.

What affected drivers can do

BMW has notified its dealer network of the issue and plans to notify registered owners of affected motorcycles by mail on March 28, 2023.  Owners of affected motorcycles will be notified of the reset Dynamic Pro settings and asked to check and adjust them if necessary.  They are asked to take their motorcycle to their nearest BMW dealer for inspection and to update their service records accordingly.

Affected owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.  In addition, they can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.  NHTSA’s campaign number for this recall is 23V-051 (data valid for the Americas).

If your motorcycle is affected, make sure you are contacted by BMW and take all necessary steps to ensure your motorcycle is safe.  If you are unsure if your motorcycle is affected, you can check your chassis number on BMW’s website or contact your local BMW dealer for more information.  The recall should be taken seriously and all necessary measures taken to minimize the risk of accidents.
