A look into the past and into the future
The R 12 nineT, a powerful Classic Roadster, seamlessly picks up the aesthetic and heritage of the 2013 R nineT. It offers a wealth of customization options and opens up virtually unlimited possibilities for individual design.
Dr. Markus Schramm, the head of BMW Motorrad, had this to say about the model: “For BMW Motorrad’s 90th birthday, the R nineT with its customizing concept established the new Heritage experience – and thus a cornerstone of our model range that we can no longer imagine doing without today. With an even more classic, pared-down design language, even greater degrees of freedom in terms of customizability and, last but not least, newly positioned, innovative technology, the new R 12 nineT consistently continues the successful Heritage story surrounding the legendary BMW Boxer engines.”
Heartbeat: the 1200 boxer engine
The first BMW motorcycle, the R 32, relied on the two-cylinder boxer engine 100 years ago. With its unmistakable design, powerful acceleration, unique power delivery, typical sound and high running quality, the Boxer quickly became legendary synonymous with BMW motorcycles. With its air/oil-cooled boxer engine, the new R 12 nineT continues this great tradition. As with many models in the history of BMW Motorrad, for example the current R 18, the number 12 in the model name refers to the engine displacement.
Design and details: A classic reinterpreted
The new R 12 nineT combines the original character of the boxer engine and the design language of traditional motorcycle eras even more strongly than its predecessor. At the same time, it combines innovative technology and a modular concept that offers riders maximum customization options.
Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design BMW Motorrad, emphasizes: “The emphatically purist design language is dominated by the clear tank/seat/rear line, in the style of the traditional /5 or the legendary R 90 S of the 1970s. At first glance, the tank itself is a classic BMW boxer tank, with a typical bend in the lower edge and classic knee joint. In keeping with an authentic roadster appearance, the new R 12 NineT also features side covers in the area of the frame triangle – another reminiscence of BMW motorcycles of the 1970s.”
