The BMW R18 could be joined by a little sister, the BMW R12, powered by a 1200cc example instead of a 1803cc boxer. This was suggested by name announcements. Now the name R 12 S has also been applied for, which raises speculation of a motorcycle in the style of the R nineT.
Naming rights applied for BMW R12
As revealed in May 2022, BMW applied for naming rights for the “R12” designation in the U.S., Japan, Europe and Australia back at the end of last year. Even though securing the naming rights does not necessarily mean that a corresponding model will also be released, an R12 would fit well into BMW’s lineup.
The R18 enjoys great popularity and an R12, with a slightly smaller boxer, could certainly find its buyers. It would be quite possible that the 1254cc engine of the R1250 model series or the air-cooled 1170cc engine of the R NineT could be used in an R12.
But more of a retro bike in the style of the R nineT? – BMW R12S
In October 2022, BMW additionally secured the naming rights for the “R 12 S” designation. This again raises questions and provides new speculation.
Traditionally, the “S” at BMW means that it is a sports version or a more sporty version of the model. That may not fit so properly with a future small cruiser. Some interpret it simply as an upgraded version of the standard model, but some also think that’s why there’s no Crusier behind the R12 designation at all….
They suspect rather a RetroModell in the style of the R nineT behind the designation R 12. Here also a sportier version with the designation R 12 S would fit better.
Currently, however, all this is still speculation and you have to wait and see what BMW will ultimately announce.
