With the new BMW R 12 S, BMW Motorrad is expanding its range in the Heritage class and presenting a sporty retro bike that brings the spirit of the iconic R 90 S from the 1970s into the present.  The design, equipment and details of the model are intended to reflect both tradition and modernity.

A look back: The R 90 S and its influence on the motorcycle world

In 1973, BMW Motorrad presented the R 90 S, a motorcycle that not only impressed with its technical innovations, but also with its striking design.  With 67 hp (49 kW) and a top speed of 200 km/h, it set sporty accents.  Designer Hans A. Muth gave it an unmistakable look with an aerodynamic handlebar fairing and a rear apron.  These features made the R 90 S one of the first production motorcycles with a comprehensive aerodynamic concept.

It also made a name for itself on the race track: Hans-Otto Butenuth and Helmut Dähne celebrated a class victory at the Production TT on the Isle of Man in 1976.  In the same year, Steve McLaughlin won the prestigious 200 miles of Daytona and Reg Pridmore became the first AMA Superbike champion.  These successes contributed to the fact that the R 90 S is still considered one of the most sought-after BMW models today.

The BMW R 12 S: retro charm in a modern guise

The new BMW R 12 S draws on numerous design elements and the spirit of the R 90 S to create a link between past and present.  Based on the R 12 nineT, the R 12 S presents itself as an authentic retro bike with a sporty character.

“The defining design elements of our R 12 S include the handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing with the tinted windshield, the seat with contrasting stitching and the paint finish in lava orange metallic as a reminiscence of the legendary R 90 S Daytona Orange from 1975,” explains Alexander Buckan, Head of BMW Motorrad Design.  The design is complemented by details such as the red “S” on the side covers, the red double finish and brushed aluminum surfaces on the tank and seat hump.

Extensive standard equipment and elegant details

The R 12 S comes with a wide range of standard equipment that underlines its retro character while offering modern technology.  The highlights include:

  • – Option 719 Classic II wheels: wire-spoke wheels with natural anodized aluminium rim rings.
  • – Shadow and Shadow II milled parts packages: These include cylinder head covers, footrest systems and levers with a high-quality finish.
  • – Headlight Pro: An adaptive cornering light that ensures better visibility when driving at night.
  • – Comfort package: With Hill Start Control, heated grips, cruise control and Shift Assistant Pro.

Customization options and accessories

The BMW R 12 S offers numerous options for individualization.  Accessories from the R 12 nineT such as titanium rear silencer, soft bags or navigation equipment are also available for the R 12 S.  For an even more striking look, the short rear end or a black license plate holder can be added.

Optional features such as a tire pressure monitoring system, an anti-theft alarm system, an intelligent emergency call or a digital micro TFT display are also available.

Conclusion

The BMW R 12 S is a successful homage to the R 90 S and combines retro charm with modern technology.  It appeals not only to lovers of classic motorcycles, but also to riders looking for a sporty and individual motorcycle.  With its equipment and versatile customization options, it has the potential to impress both on the road and on the racetrack.
