Aprilia X GP: Piaggio announces new limited edition high-performance model

Piaggio has registered a new brand name with the European Union Intellectual Property Office and the United Kingdom: Aprilia X GP. This heralds the fifth model in Aprilia's limited edition X series. The new model is expected to follow in the tradition of the Italian brand's previous high-performance bikes and is likely to be based on technology from the MotoGP project.

History of the Aprilia X models

Since 2019, Aprilia has been launching exclusive special models with the suffix “X.” The first was the RSV4 X, which was released to mark the tenth anniversary of the superbike. Among other features, this model was equipped with carbon fairings and high-quality Brembo GP4-MS aluminum brake calipers. Its limited availability and features made it a coveted collector’s item.

This was followed by the Tuono V4 X – a motorcycle designed exclusively for the racetrack, which provided more downforce with full carbon wings (winglets). The models in the X series are fundamentally designed for performance and exclusivity and rely on components and technology that come directly from factory racing.

Another milestone was the RSV4 XTrenta, which once again transferred technology from the MotoGP program to a limited-edition road motorcycle. The number of X models produced has always remained very low. For example, the RSV4 X ex3ma was limited to just 30 units, which, according to the manufacturer, sold out in just 76 days.

What can we expect from the new Aprilia X GP?

The new X GP model is considered the most extreme version of the RSV4 series to date. It is expected that the machine will come even closer to the performance data and technology of the MotoGP prototypes than all previous X models. Although there have already been X models based on the Tuono V4, there are many indications that the new X GP will once again be based on the RSV4.

There are currently no official details available regarding the technical specifications. However, based on previous models, it can be assumed that exclusive materials such as carbon will again be used and that state-of-the-art chassis technology and powerful braking systems will be installed. Low weight will also be a decisive factor once again. The RSV4 X ex3ma, for example, weighed around 165 kg (approx. 364 lbs) dry.

Since Aprilia has so far focused heavily on factory racing in its X models, the new X GP model is also likely to be equipped with special features from the MotoGP world. The performance data is likely to be correspondingly high, with values of around 225 hp (165 kW) at 13,000 rpm having been achieved in the past.

Market launch and exclusivity

The registration of the Aprilia X GP brand name suggests that the model could be unveiled in the near future. As with its predecessors, a strictly limited number of units can be expected. No information is available yet on the price and exact specifications. Some of the previous models were offered for around €50,000 (approx. $54,000).

Conclusion

With the registration of the Aprilia X GP brand name, Piaggio is continuing its series of exclusive high-performance models. Expectations for the new model are high, as it is set to bring motorsport technology to the road once again and is likely to be of particular interest to collectors and enthusiasts.
