TRIUMPH has unveiled the all-new Speed Triple 1200 RS. It is powered by a redesigned 1,160cc three-cylinder engine that produces 30 more horsepower than the previous model’s engine.
Newly developed engine
The new three-cylinder has 1,160cc and generates a maximum power of 180 PS at 10,750 rpm. The maximum torque is 125 Nm and is reached at 9,000 rpm.
The complete powertrain has been designed for higher performance with lower weight. Compared to the previous model, this has resulted in a 7 kg saving, and it is now also more compact. The redline starts 650 rpm later, – at 11,150 rpm.
The increased power and lower weight of the Speed Triple 1200 RS results in the best power-to-weight ratio in the history of Speedys. Compared to the original Speed Triple from 1994, the power-to-weight ratio has almost doubled.
Lightweight chassis
The new chassis is 10 kg lighter, offers a completely new rider ergonomics and provides an even more dominant seating position. TRIUMPH says it has created a handling revolution. Ready to ride, the weight is 198 kg. The aluminum bridge frame is 17 percent lighter and ensures that the center of gravity moves further forward and down.
The handlebars are 13 mm wider, allowing better control of the bike. Compared to the previous model, the footpegs have been moved slightly inward, increasing lean angle clearance without restricting legroom.
The new seat, which has been changed in contour and construction, has a height of 830mm.
Suspension and brakes
The standard premium components in race track specification ensure optimum handling. The damping components are from Öhlins and are said to offer an optimal balance of performance, comfort and control.
The NIX30 upside-down fork, as well as the TTX36 twin-tube monoshock are adjustable in preload, rebound and compression.
For deceleration, Brembo Stylema radial monobloc calipers and 320 brake discs were used. The Brembo MCS brake lever has an adjustable lever travel.
From the factory, the new Speed Triple 1200 RS is equipped with Metzeler Racetec RR, but alternatively Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SC2 are offered as a factory-approved racetrack option.
Equipment
Completely new is the 5-inch TFT instrument, which has been designed to allow more settings to be made while driving. For example, the traction control can be adjusted without stopping. During adjustments, the tachometer is moved to the side to create more space for the menu.
The “My TRIUMPH” connectivity system is standard. This gives the rider access to arrow navigation, GoPro or phone activation and music control from the handlebar controls.
Quickshifter is standard equipment. It enables upshifting and downshifting without using the clutch lever. The modular Continental MIB-EVO ABS is equipped with an integrated 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) and takes account of lean angle, among other things. There is an extra mode each for the road and the racetrack, and the ABS is also linked to the different riding modes.
The front brakes are coupled with the rear brake, so that when the front brake is applied, the rear one is also activated. The precisely calculated dosage is intended to shorten the braking distance and provide more stability during hard braking maneuvers.
The traction control is adjustable in four stages and takes the lean angle into account. If desired, it can also be deactivated completely. In addition to five different riding modes, there is also a wheelie control.
The lighting uses LED technology all around. Additional daytime running lights have been added above the headlight to give the bike a wicked look.
Other features include keyless start and lock system that also includes the fuel cap, standard cruise control, optional heated grips, optional tire pressure monitoring system and lightweight lithium-ion battery.
Bodywork, colors and prices
The front fender is made of carbon, the engine spoiler is color-matched, and there is a seat cowl with an interchangeable pillion seat. The 17-inch lightweight wheels feature black-painted V-spokes.
Two color variations are offered, Sapphire Black and Matt Silver Ice. For customization, Triumph offers 35 accessories ranging from style & details, technology, and luggage to protection and care. Among them are running light turn signals, a matching painted fly-screen cockpit trim or sporty handlebar end mirrors.
From mid-March 2021, the new TRIUMPH Speed Triple 1200 RS will be available at dealers. The price in Germany is 17,500 euros plus delivery costs, or in Austria at 20,500 euros including ancillary costs and Nova.
