Michelin is taking a look into the future to show what their goals are. In a YouTube video, you can see a future vision of how a tire is made from recycled material.
Alternative raw materials
Currently, 30 percent of the French manufacturer’s tires are made from natural, recycled or sustainable raw materials. The company aims to increase this proportion to 100 percent by 2050 at the latest. The butadiene required for tire production is obtained from crude oil, but the company wants to obtain it from plants in the future. Plastic syrene is also to be produced from food containers that are no longer needed, such as plastic bottles.
In addition, the company is also working on extracting pyrosyse oil from used tires and thus recycling them. Swedish company Enviro holds the patents for pyrolysis oil, gas and steel recovery technologies. Michelin plans to build a large tire recycling plant in collaboration with Enviro.
Integrating recycling into production
Michelin is also supporting the BlackCycle consortium. The project is funded by the European Union and includes 13 public and private companies working together to integrate tire recycling into tire production.
